Aaron J.'s Story

Aaron J. Cheerman was born in Meriden, CT, January 1, 1945 to Abraham and Ida Cheerman. After graduating Orville H. Platt High in 1963, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the start of the Vietnam War, where he served with the 6th Marine Regiment. In the summer of 1964, Aaron was assigned to The Marine Barracks at the United States Naval Academy as a weapon instructor for the first year Midshipmen. In September of 1964 he participated in training exercises in Spain and Portugal called Steel Spike 1 and other support operations. Aaron was Honorably Discharged early from active duty in the Marine Corps in 1965 due to a physical disability and is considered a Vietnam Era Veteran.
On November 20, 1965, Aaron married Sylvia Gutterman of Marlborough, CT. They have been married for nearly 43 years and have resided in Manchester, CT, for 41 of those years. Aaron now enjoys spending his retirement time with his wife Sylvia, his daughter Debbie Cheerman, his son-in-law Mark and daughter Lori Zackin and his grandson Ari.
Aaron was in the sewing machine business for over 38 years and is still highly regarded as an authority in the sewing machine industry. He entered into the sewing machine industry in 1965 and in 1976; he established a sewing machine store, Manchester Sewing Machine Center. educational programs in the industry. Aaron's role at Manchester Sewing Machine Center extended well beyond that of owner. With his business management skills, he has remained active in civic responsibilities and has shared his knowledge with many groups and organizations. In 2004 Aaron was inducted into the Sewing Industry Hall of Fame.
Today Aaron continues to be active with the United States Marine Corps as the Co-Editor of the Marine Corps Leagues' Semper Fi Newsletter. He is also the Co-Public Relations Officer for the Department of Connecticut Marine Corps League, and he is a member of the Honorary Military Order of the Devil Dogs, and in 2007 Aaron was appointed to the position as the Chairman of the National Budget Committee for the Devil Dogs. The Department of Defense has Authorized Aaron as a Provider in the Military Funeral Honors Program. Also, he is an associate member of the British Royal Marines Association. In 2008 Aaron was recognized and given the Highest Honor, the MCL/HCD Marine of the Year Award!
Aaron is a member of the Home Sewing Association, SDTA, Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce. Aaron has been a member of Temple Beth Shalom for 41 years and is a Past President of B'nai B'rith Charter Oak Lodge and is also a member of the Jewish War Veterans. Aaron has received numerous outstanding achievement awards from the sewing machine industry and in 2003 was nominated to receive a Small Business Award and was appointed to President Bush's Small Business Advisory Council.
